Are you inferring that negative equity is a negative? If so, why?

Yes, I do. A negative equity simply means your liabilities are bigger than your assets. So companies who bought back stocks and have negative equity apparently did this with debt. Management is trying to increase EPS in the short term. In my opinion agressieve focus on short term instead of compounding in the long run.
